Eagles Trade for WR Jahan Dotson from Commanders
The Washington Commanders have traded their 2022 first-round pick, Jahan Dotson, along with a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles. In return, the Commanders received a 2025 third-round pick and two seventh-round picks.
With the acquisition of Dotson, the Eagles have solidified their No. 3 wide receiver position, complementing star receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, both of whom secured long-term contract extensions this offseason.
Dotson, 24, brings additional firepower to the Eagles' offense, joining a lineup that includes quarterback Jalen Hurts, running back Saquon Barkley, and tight end Dallas Goedert. Throughout the summer, the WR3 position in Philadelphia saw a rotation of players, including veterans Parris Campbell, Britain Covey, and rookie Johnny Wilson, all competing for first-team reps.
Last season, Dotson recorded 49 receptions for 518 yards and four touchdowns with the Commanders. Despite being drafted 16th overall by Washington in 2022, Dotson struggled to establish himself as the team's No. 2 receiver opposite Terry McLaurin. In 29 career games, he accumulated 84 catches for 1,041 yards and 11 touchdowns but was unable to consistently perform as expected. Coaches noted that while Dotson was versatile, especially in the slot, he needed to improve his play strength. Last season, he had a 7.4% drop rate, which was the 10th highest in the NFL.
Washington's search for a reliable No. 2 receiver continues. They recently drafted Luke McCaffrey in the third round, who performed well in a recent game against the Miami Dolphins, contributing both as a receiver and on special teams. The Commanders also have veteran receivers Olamide Zaccheaus, Jamison Crowder, Byron Pringle, and Martavis Bryant competing for roles, with Pringle offering additional versatility as a potential kick returner.
